Intro

CLEAN and ATV invite an exclusive delegation of 25 Danish executives at companies and higher education institutions who focus on Carbon Capture Utilization & Storage, to join in for an exciting journey into the thriving CCUS hub in Vancouver and Edmonton.

The purpose of the study trip is to gather inspiration and knowledge, and to create new networks that can foster and leverage fruitful research and corporate collaborations, with mutual benefits for Canada and Denmark. The ATV & CLEAN delegation will be made up by 25 participants and will have a strong focus on R&D and on how innovative methods of carbon capture and utilization are being scaled up – better, faster, cheaper.

The program is developed in collaboration with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service and Green Hub Denmark. It involves all stakeholders in the Canadian Ecosystem i.e., government, businesses, ventures, universities, and knowledge partners from, a.o., the Universities of Alberta, British Columbia, and Victoria.

“We are so pleased to see such a strong interest from a like-minded country like Denmark in Canada and Alberta’s ecosystem for carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) as well as hydrogen. Canada has well defined strategies for deploying these technologies and has been progressively advancing them with the aim to become net-zero by 2050. Canada sees Denmark as an innovative and world-leading country within clean technologies and its companies and universities are reliable and strong partners for Canada,” siger Michael Willmott, Senior Trade Commissioner at the Embassy of Canada in Denmark.

Why is this important and why talk utilization now

The Danish government's climate plan has led to a strong focus on the necessity of capturing and storing CO2 – as well as utilizing CO2 for the P-2-X purposes and for alternative materials of the future. The development of CCUS technologies in Denmark is picking up pace, aided by initiatives such as the innomissions, but there are still valuable lessons to be learned, new technologies that need development, and new collaborations that need to be built if we are to succeed with the goals of reducing CO2 emissions with 70% by 2030 and introduce circular economy to the carbon value chain.

WHY Canada - Vancouver and Edmonton

Canada is a CCUS technology leader with large-scale, cutting-edge projects in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

Alberta alone is home to two of the world’s 18 large-scale CCUS projects. The Shell Quest plant in Alberta captures more than one million tons of carbon annually. Also, the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line project, now in full operation, has the capacity to transport 14.6 million tons of carbon per year, currently drawn from an oil refinery, a fertilizer plant, and other industrial sources, and injected into depleted oil fields deep underground.

With the highest technology sector growth rates in Canada, British Columbia is home to several new Canadian clean technology companies that focus on carbon capture, use and sequestration. Around Vancouver, novel ways of capturing carbon are being developed and researched. Two of the 10 fastest growing private Greentech companies in Canada are Vancouver-based and are focusing on Carbon Capture - Svante and Carbon Engineering. Vancouver also hosts state of the art test and scale-up facilities for developers of new CCUS solutions.

The program - Vancouver and Edmonton

Program CCUS study tour - ATV & CLEAN

The ATV CLEAN program will consist of 2 days in Vancouver and 3 days in Edmonton. 5 days in total.

Part of the program in Edmonton is prepared in close collaboration with e.g., Green Hub Denmark (GHDK) which has a delegation from the project CO2VISION, which focuses on turning the North Denmark Region into a national and international CCUS hub.

Program modules are in progress and subject for changes and will be continuously updated on this page. See one-page program here.

Who can join

The primary target group for this delegation trip are decision-makers in Danish CCUS Eco-system from technology companies, knowledge institutions, organizations, clusters, government, and grant providers.

Outcome - What we hope to learn

The trip is relevant if you are interested in 1) how we get started building a carbon tech ecosystem 2) learning more about the next generation carbon technologies 3) identifying future possibilities for international collaboration.
