About ATV

ATV – the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences – combines the prestige of being a national Academy with the ambition of making Denmark one of the five leading Science and Engineering regions in the world. Hence, ATV is an independent think tank that utilise the combined knowledge of our more than 800 Fellows and partner members – for the benefit of future generations.

ATV does not undertake scientific research per se but works to improve the framework for science and technology research and application in Denmark. As a member-driven think tank, with Fellows and technology leaders in universities, industry and public sector, ATV is uniquely positioned to qualify, disseminate, and implement our conclusions and recommendations.

ATV was founded in 1937. Then and now, our credibility is based on our independence and the strong professional competences of our Fellows and partner members.

Non-profit and Independent

ATV works on a non-profit basis, is a private organisation, and does not receive any direct public funding. Our Fellows and partner members work pro bono for ATV, supported by our secretariat with 11 full-time employees.

ATV running budget is financed by membership fees paid by our partners, which includes some of Denmark’s largest companies, universities, GTS-institutes, NGOs and foundations [in Danish]. Specific projects are financed by sponsorships and/or foundation grants and we often form project partnerships with other organisations in Denmark and internationally, e.g. through our Science and Engineering project [in Danish].

Creating Value in a Science & Engineering Agenda

ATV’s over-all vision is essentially about Denmark’s future: How can Denmark be a strong player in the global knowledge economy at a time when digitalisation and sustainability are high on the agenda? ATV’s answer is Science & Engineering.

Therefore, ATV runs several projects that create value for our partners and our Fellows and partner members as well as the organisations where they work, i.e. businesses, knowledge institutions etc., and society in general.

Unique Members

The Academy’s network of members is unique: Our more than 800 Fellows and partner members are research directors, business executives, leading researchers, and experts within the fields of technology, technology management and related topics.

Half of our members work in the private sector, the other half work at universities and other knowledge institutions. Our Fellows and partner members also include employees from the GTS-institutes, NGOs, and funding agencies.

Denmark’s Leading Network for Tech Leaders

ATV is a meeting place for technology leaders – and a great networking platform. Indeed, our members often describe ATV as “Denmark’s best network for tech leaders”.

But the Academy is not for the ‘members only’. We put emphasis on getting knowledge and recommendation to a broader public through dialogue and involvement of stakeholders in society in general.

Thus, it is possible to use ATV as a neutral platform where stakeholders can meet across trades, disciplines, and interests to create common solutions.

Current themes and projects

Technology development is an important driver to create growth, wealth and welfare in Denmark as well as finding solutions for grand challenges in a global perspective. Therefore, ATV acts as ‘the voice of technology’ in the public debate, and the Academy is working in a multi-disciplinary way under technology-related themes – selected by the Fellows and partner members.

Currently, ATV's work is organised around the following themes:

  • Science and engineering
  • Digitalisation
  • Future industrial production
  • Science and engineering in education
  • Health-tech
  • Technology for sustainability
  • The Council for Technology and Society
