Intro

Danish Academy of Technical Sciences and our thematic working groups publish a range of reports that analyse different perspetives related to science, technology and engineering in Denmark. Most reports are published in Danish but - when relevant to the topic - reports are published in English. Futher more, for some reports an English Executive Summary has been published.

The World's Leading Tech Regions - Testing Denmark's Capacity in Tech

Author(s): Science & Engineering project, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: Tech, patents, publications, hotsports

Publication date: February 2021

Short version of our report that compares global activities in vital technology areas that are vital to Denmark. The report shows that Denmark, compared to other leading regions, is lagging behind, both in terms of publications and in patenting, save for a few areas. This stresses the need for Denmark to rethink our strategy towards technology development and focus areas.

State of the nation 2020: Denmark as Science & Engineering Region

Author(s): Science & Engineering project, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: Universities, Jobs, start-ups, Globalizing and grand challenges, Growth and competition

Publication date: March 2020

Abstract
The report ’State of the Nation’ is published once a year and investigates the impact of S&E companies on the Danish economy. As such, the report focuses on Danish companies where S&E and STEM competencies (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) feature prominently.

Previous reports show that S&E companies create more value for Danish society than the rest of the industry. These conclusions are confirmed and underlined in this year's ‘State of the nation’ report. The new figures in the 2020 report reveal a strong increase in S&E companies’ GDP contribution despite a significant drop in the export in 2017. The report also follows up on last year’s focus on the Danish growth of S&E start-ups. In this context, while the Danish S&E population exported less in 2017 compared to 2016, the export intensity of the S&E population is still higher than the export intensity found among traditional industries. This confirms that newly establish S&E companies are often ’born globals’ and have the world as their market. The report is based on register data from 2017 (the latest available).

International Top Talent

Author(s): Science & Engineering project, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: International Talent, STEM competencies, Top managers and Science & Engineering
Publication date: November 2019

Abstract
The report covers Denmark’s challenge in attracting highly qualified foreign labour, which is a prerequisite if Denmark is to become a world-class Science and Engineering region. The report is a result of interviews with managers from Science & engineering companies, HR-managers, international top-leaders, and a survey with a 100 international STEM-profiles in Denmark. The study confirms that Denmark needs more IT- and STEM-experts – also on the executive level, which is why more and more Danish companies are looking abroad to find their top managers. The report lists strengths and weaknesses that foreign talents experience while working in Denmark. The report concludes that companies should improve onboarding and take responsibility for their employees and their families. Also, the issue must have top priority for politicians, while demanding a stronger coordination of key players.

India – Land of Opportunities

Author(s): Science & Engineering project, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: Production, Education, globalizing and grand challenges, sustainability and the UN’s sustainable development goals
Publication date: November 2019

Abstract
This report outlines how Denmark and India can collaborate on with partners in India to further India's green transformation, and how India can inspire Denmark to work with the Sustainable Development Goals. The report focuses on seven learnings that need to be considered if the potential is to be fulfilled. The overall most important learning is that India is a burning platform for the UN’s SDGs. If India fails – so will the world. Therefore, the report argues, the question is not if Denmark should contribute to India’s green transition, but of how. The report was produced as an outcome of an ATV study trip to India in September 2019.

Better Health with AI?

Author(s): Health Science Technology Group, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: AI, health, life science, medico and solutions

Publication date: May 2019

Abstract
This report tries to clarify, demystify and raise awareness of the potential of new digital technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence) in relation to healthcare.

The report – which is branded as a ‘white paper’ – is a result of interviews with several Danish companies, that work on developing AI-based solutions for the healthcare system. The report takes a closer look at the potential and the concrete solutions that AI can bring, but it also examines some of the challenges that it is facing. The aim of the white paper is not to provide a specific solution to the challenges, but to initiate a dialogue on how to make Denmark a development hub for AI-based healthcare technologies and services as well as how to provide the best possible healthcare data.

State of the nation 2019: Denmark as Science & Engineering Region

Author(s): Science & Engineering project, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: Universities, Jobs, Regions, Globalizing and grand challenges, Growth and competition

Publication date: April 2019

Abstract
The report ’State of the Nation’ is published once a year and investigates the impact of S&E companies on the Danish economy. As such, the report focuses on Danish companies where S&E and STEM competencies (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) feature prominently.

This 2019 report shows that the number of S&E companies and employees in Denmark are growing and have become more productive. At the same time, productivity in the industry and business community have been declining. The report also presents a new analysis, focused on S&E growth, which shows that S&E start-ups grow much faster, in terms of their revenue and number of employees, compared to other start-ups. The report is based on register data from 2016 (the latest available).

Denmark’s New Growth Companies

Author(s): Science & Engineering project, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: S&E startups, Danish economy, growth, innovation and the technology society

Publication date: April 2019

Abstract
The report focuses on Denmark’s S&E start-ups, aged 0-15 years. The report analyses the impact that the 1,125 Danish S&E start-ups have on Danish economy. Also, the report maps out the typical development for an S&E start-up. Overall, the analysis provides a unique insight into the Danish business environment and a detailed picture of the ‘engine’ behind Denmark’s economic achievements. The S&E-start-ups have a remarkable development compared to other start-ups: They grow faster, earn more, are more productive, and begin to export sooner. The data provided in the report is prepared for ATV by DAMVAD Analytics in 2018. ATV also conducted qualitative interviews with ten managers of S&E start-ups.

Disruptive China

Author(s): Science & Engineering project, Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: China, global leader, digitization, growth, competitiveness
Publication date: November 2018

Abstract
The report focuses on China’s remarkably fast transformation from a production country to a global leader in new technologies and digital business models. The transformation indicates that a tectonic shift is taking place with respect to where new technologies are developed. China is making massive and targeted investments in new technologies such as AI, big data, and IoT which are helping China accelerate its development. The report recommends that Denmark updates its globalisation strategy and develops a national technology strategy. The report was produced as an outcome of an ATV study trip to Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta in 2018.

Education for the Knowledge-Based Production of the Future

Author(s): Danish Academy of Technical Sciences
Keywords: technical development, education system, industry 4.0, universities and production
Publication date: September 2018

Abstract
The report discusses how new opportunities, already existing in technology and technical development, require a comprehensive rearrangement of the Danish education system to match the future industry.

The report lists several recommendations of how players on the market should address the transition. A main recommendation is educational collaboration between companies, universities, and the technical-vocational programmes. This, however, will require a significant change of culture in both educational institutions and companies. The report lists four barriers that must be overcome: framework conditions, cultural differences, support and prioritizing from managerial layers and practical conditions.
